How many abortions happen per year?

In the latest research by the Guttmacher Institute, there were 862,320 abortions performed in 2017. This is down 7% from their previous survey in 2014 which had 926,190 abortions in that year.

Abortion Rate & Ratio

In 2017, the abortion rate was 13.5 abortions per 1,000 women who were aged 15-44. It is down 8% from 14.6 per 1,000 in 2014. This is the lowest rate ever observed in the USA. In 1973 when abortion became legal the rate was 16.3.

Who Has Abortions?

It's estimated that 24% of alll women will have an abortion (in any form) by the age of 45.

More than half of all U.S. abortion patients were in their 20s.

White patients accounted for 29%, black patients for 28%, hispanic ptients for 25% and undiclosed or other races only were 9%.

94% of abortion patients identified as heterosexual or straight. 4% said they were bisexual. 0.3% identified as homosexual, gay, or lesbian. Only 1% identified as "something else" or did not say.

59% of abortions were obtained by parents who already had a child.

75% of abortion patients in 2014 were below poverty or considered low-income.

16% of abortion patients were born outside of the USA.

51% of abortion patients were using a contraceptive method in the month they became pregnant.

Clinic Data

In 2017, there were 808 clinics providing abortion services.

72% of clinics offered abortions up to 12 weeks. 25% up to 20 weeks and only 10% did abortion procedures past 24 weeks.

Abortion Pill Data

39% opf all abortions in 2017 were a medication abortion.

30% of clinics provided only medication abortion.

Medication abortions increased from 5% of all abortions to 39% of all abortions since 2001 as more abortion pills have been approved by the FDA.
